Dow elects a new Board of Directors, with William S. Stavropoulos, president and CEO, to serve as Chairman of the Board, replacing Frank P. Popoff upon his retirement. In turn, Michael D. Parker, executive vice president, was elected to the position of president and CEO of the company.
Dow and seven other founders create Elemica, a global business-to-business e-marketplace for the chemical industry with a combined investment of $100 million.
Jan – Cargill Dow introduces NatureWorks TM polylactide (PLA).
Jan – Dow, in conjunction with Maxxim Medical, announced it will supply INTACTA* performance polymers for use in the manufacture and sale of Maxxim's SensiCare™ Advantix™ exam/dental glove in North America. SensiCare Advantix has been developed by Maxxim and Dow in response to market demand for a cost-effective exam/dental glove that eliminates exposure of healthcare practitioners and patients to allergens transmitted from proteins and chemical accelerators commonly found in natural rubber latex and some synthetic rubber gloves.
Feb – Dow Fiber Solutions launches DOW XLA* fiber.
Feb – Dow STRANDFOAM* is used in making cars safer (Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, Mitsubishi, Fiat and Nissan are using it).
Jan/Feb – Dow approves a 12-Point Sustainable Development Operating Plan.
March – The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy awarded The Dow Chemical Company the ENERGY STAR Award for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) for their Texas Energy Facility.
May – Dow Wins National Award for Corporate Health and Safety.
June – Following a period of major reconstruction, BSL becomes known as Dow Central Germany, as a reflection of Dow's 100 percent ownership of the operation as of June 1.
June – Dow Plastics announced the launch of its first INSPIRE* Performance Polymer, a new propylene base resin built on molecular architecture. This new resin takes performance and processing ability beyond conventional polypropylene.
July – Dow announced the construction of a world-scale propylene oxide and styrene monomer (POSM) facility to be built at one of its fully integrated sites on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Sept – Michelin and The Polyurethanes Business of The Dow Chemical Company entered into a joint-development agreement to accelerate the technology associated with the run-flat support rings, internal devices that support a deflated tire, for PAX System, Michelin's integrated tire/wheel system. |

Jan – R&D Magazine named Dow an R&D 100 Award winner for INDEX* Interpolymers.
Feb – Day One of the new Dow occurs on February 6, 2001, as Union Carbide becomes a subsidiary through a merger transaction. The company headquarters remain in Midland, Michigan.
March – Dow announces breakthrough in development of SILK* semiconductor dielectric resin.
March – Dow introduced a new line of FILMTEC â nanofiltration membrane module products. FILMTEC NF membranes are a barrier separation media that allows desirable minerals important in human health, like calcium and magnesium to pass through, but rejects organic compounds including most viruses, bacteria, pesticides and herbicides. Nanofiltration membranes will play an important role in helping municipalities meet these more rigorous standards.
May – $1.2 Million Dow Grant to Aid Sustainable Development Effort in Tanzania.
July – In response to a global need for a cost-effective, natural rubber latex (NRL)-free critical environment (CE) glove alternative, The Dow Chemical Company and its subsidiaries today announced the availability of its INTACTA* IC 1000 Polyurethane Gloves for the CE market.
July – Dow Introduces UCAR™ DEGree™ Aircraft Deicing Fluid.
Aug – Dow Using "Text Mining" Technology To Discover Knowledge.
Aug – Dow introduces THE ENHANCER*, established as a premiere backing for the specified commercial carpet. It provides maximum value to the architect, designer, facility manager, and end-user with functional benefits such as proven ergonomics, improved life cycle costing, and extended carpet life.
Sept – Dow invents a new polymeric Light Emitting Diode material – pLED for short – that will help wow the world with brighter and more colorful images.

Dow's employees find new ways to reduce waste, wastewater, emissions and energy saving $65 million (WRAP program).
Dow is named as the leading sustainability-driven company in the chemical industry by the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index, placing Dow among the top performers in the area of Sustainable Development.

Sept/Oct – Dow designed and installed a new water treatment system at the Can Ciuoc hospital in Vietnam that converts brackish water from a local well into clean, usable water.
